Big Oak, Texas a fictional west Texas town where a series of contemporary romance novels take place.
Big Oak, Texas is sorrounded on all three sides by the roaring waters of the Big Oak River. So there’s only one way in and out of town. It’s a small West Texas town, a good two hours from the next big city, and all of its big city problems.
Big Oak was founded in 1791 by the son of a cotton farmer, looking for an area to start a new life. He wanted to get away from what his father and grandfather before him did and decided to spend his inheritance on opening a saloon. That turned out to have been a very good idea because the saloon thrived as a community sprang up around it. He called it the Big Oak Saloon because it was built near a big oak tree.
How old the big oak tree was, that fascinated almost anyone who saw it, nobody really knows. When the town was founded, it was already old, and it still stands to this day, in silent grandeur. The trunk is knotted and gnarled, and the limbs are bent as if it carried the weight of the world.
The Big Oak Saloon stood for one hundred and ten years until the decrepit old building finally gave way during a fire that swept through Main Street in 1901. The amazing thing was, despite losing five buildings that day, the fire brushed past the big tree, leaving it completely untouched.
Today Big Oak is still a small, cozy town just like it was when it was founded all those years ago.
